6 Writing Prompts You Can Use Over and Over Again
Ever sat down to write and came up with absolutely nothing? It happens to the best of us, but these 6 prompts will ensure your journal never has an empty page again.
- Write about something that’s caught your interest recently. Sometimes, we put far too many restrictions on what we journal about. The point of a journal is to reflect on the past, look forward to the future and, most importantly, talk about the now. When you’re looking back on your journal in a year or even ten years, reading an entry about your perception of a current event can really give you a throwback to how you used to think, feel, and see the world. It might not seem like a big deal now, but it can help your future self see how far you’ve come.
- Write about something you believed as a child. Our childhoods are filled with make believe and stories, what did you believe as a child that you were wrong about? This could be funny, frightening, or upsetting.
- Write about a time you’ve helped someone. We’ve all made an influence on someone else’s life. Look back on your life and think about a time (maybe recently) where you realize you made a lasting change in the life of another person. You might feel silly writing about it, but it can actually be quite a humbling thing to reflect on.
- Write about something you think you missed out on. Life works in funny ways. There’s likely been an event in your life that, at the time (or maybe now), you thought was a missed opportunity or mistake, but looking back on it, you might see it differently. Write about the event, how you felt at the time, and how your view has changed now. If you haven’t changed your mind yet, write about an event and leave space for when you might flip back to it in the future with a different perspective.
- Write about one thing you’d change if you were in charge. This can be as specific or broad as you’d like. What would you change at your office if you were the boss? What would you have changed about your childhood if you were the parent? What would you change about the world if you were a great ruler? This is also a great entry concept to look back on them in the future.
- Write about one thing you’re going to change tomorrow. We often get so caught up in the huge things happening all around us that we forget we are active members of the society we are living in. We can all cause change if we put in a little bit of effort. Have you seen a stray cat? Find it a home. Have you noticed someone always walking alone? Say hello to them. You can make a big difference with just a small gesture, and once you come up with and write about an idea, you have yet another prompt!
